Fed: Qantas staff to walk off the job tomorrow

Qantas engineers and maintenance staff will walk off the job tomorrow in Melbourneand Sydney over the airline's plan to axe 360 maintenance jobs.

Qantas says it expects no flight delays to result from the stop-work action, but theAustralian Manufacturing Workers Union's given no such guarantee.

Union officials plan to meet Qantas management tomorrow morning to discuss the jobcuts, then report back to the maintenance workers at 1.30pm (AEST).

AMWU national secretary DOUG CAMERON says he's hoping Qantas will put the interestsof the travelling public and their employees before short term cost cutting.

Qantas announced plans last week to make 1,000 workers redundant to cope with the industrydownturn caused by SARS and the war in Iraq.

An internal memo to staff indicates 360 of those jobs will come from the engineering, technical operations and maintenance division.

Mr CAMERON says the decision to make maintenance cutbacks is ill-considered and dangerous.
