Death penalty opponent may be suspect in attack

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A death penalty opponent with strong religiousbeliefs is believed to be the attacker who tied the city's chiefmedical examiner with barbed wire and strapped a bomb to his chest,authorities say.

The bomb did not explode and medical examiner O.C. Smith escapedserious injury.

But the bomber, whose identity remains unknown, is still on theloose and dangerous, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms saidMonday.

"Anybody who might know the perpetrator could be in danger," JamesCavanaugh, the chief ATF agent in Tennessee, told a news conference.
